Build on your Business-Accounting Diploma with the Fanshawe Business Administration – Accounting Advanced Diploma program. You'll broaden your knowledge in the areas of financial and managerial accounting, taxation, financial and strategic management. You'll engage in case-studies, challenging your critical thinking skills and learning how to make better business decisions. Move beyond the basics, and into areas of auditing, financial management and controllership, cost and managerial accounting, and strategic policy and planning. Available in a traditional in class format with September admission.

You can apply for the opportunity to further develop your accounting consulting skills, with the option of substituting two courses for the intensive community consultancy program, working with real business live clients.

There are options to transfer to the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree at Fanshawe.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Business Administration - Accounting program are prepared to enter the accounting field in the public sector, the private sector (e.g., manufacturing, service industries and public accounting) as well as the not-for-profit sector. Graduates are suited to a variety of junior-level and intermediate-level positions, including junior accountant, intermediate accountant, accounting specialist, cost accountant, project accountant, assistant controller, accounts payable and receivable supervisor and tax accountant.

Program Description

Business Administration - Accounting is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program (laptop required). Building on the Business - Accounting diploma, the program curriculum covers advanced topics in accounting with courses in auditing, corporate finance, cost and managerial accounting, and strategic policy and planning. The program is mapped to the CPA's Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF). Upon graduation from the diploma, students will have transferrable credits for the ACAF. A case-based approach is used across the curriculum to expose students to real-life scenarios to develop critical thinking skills. Many employment opportunities are available in industry, public accounting, and government where graduates will work in a variety of roles. Graduates who meet admission requirements are eligible for transfer to the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) Degree program.

Co-operative Education

Co-operative education is not available in Year 3 of the Business Administration - Accounting program.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. record financial transactions in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, private enterprises, publicly accountable enterprises and non-profit organizations.

2. prepare and present financial statements, reports and other documents in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships and private enterprises.

3. contribute to strategic decision-making by applying advanced management accounting concepts.

4. prepare individuals' and Canadian-controlled private corporations' income tax returns and individuals' basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

5. analyze and evaluate organizational structures and the interdependence of functional areas, and contribute to the development of strategies which positively impact financial performance.

Business - Accounting Diploma from Fanshawe OR equivalent qualification from another institution as judged by the College OR a combination of relevant education and work experience in a related field as judged by the College. Minimum overall average of “C+” (2.5 cumulative GPA) is required. “B” grade required in ACCT-3036, ACCT-3050, ACCT-3022, FINA-3043, FINA-3044 and MATH-1045 OR in courses that are equivalent to those in this list.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years

Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10
