Environmental and Sustainability Studies is an interdisciplinary subject that will challenge you to combine skills and knowledge from a variety of different fields. You will gain a more complete understanding of natural and human environments, and you will be ready to lead change.

Acadia’s Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ESST) major develops environmental leaders, managers and professionals who are critical and insightful thinkers as well as creative problem solvers. We strive for you to become skilled in leading transformational change towards more sustainable, just, and socially responsible lifestyles, communities, institutions and societies through a broad range of career pathways across the non-profit, government and private sectors. Your professors are productive and respected researchers and scholars who are fully immersed in solving critical and pressing environmental and sustainability problems as well as creating a stimulating learning setting.

ESST is academically challenging with a focus on interdisciplinary learning that takes a conceptual problem-solving approach to understanding and tackling major sustainability issues in society. Our experiential learning approach serves to integrate both the conceptual and applied aspects of the program. Service to the community and society through engaged learning opportunities is the cornerstone of your Acadia experience. Through these experiences, you will further develop your sense of citizenship, especially with respect to environmental and sustainable stewardship.
