This joint major will focus and expand expertise where these two disciplines intersect. Students will gain insight into the languages and cultures of British Columbia and North America First Nations people. The program provides in-depth understanding of at least one First Nations language and develops skills related to language teaching and curriculum development. Students should plan their studies in consultation with both the First Nations Studies and the Department of Linguistics advisors.

First Nations Studies partners with Indigenous and other communities and individuals to build dynamic relationships that restore and revitalize traditional knowledges, ancient and modern aesthetics, languages, and literatures. As a community of learners, we connect and honour academic rigor and Indigenous perspectives through activist research, creative production, and community engagement.

The First Nations Studies program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is offered as a major and a minor. The program also offers certificates in language proficiency and in research.

This bachelor of arts (BA) degree program is for those who are interested in focusing and expanding their expertise in this discipline. Students will gain detailed insight into the cultures, histories and contemporary developments of Indigenous peoples in British Columbia and North America. Students will develop a solid foundation in the study of Indigenous issues from a variety of disciplinary approaches.

Applicant must have completed Year 12 High School or its equivalent to Canadian High School.

Obtain a satisfactory score on one of the following English language proficiency tests.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5 on the Academic Modules with no part less than 6.
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet based test) with an overall score of 88 or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (listening, speaking, writing, reading)
  • TOEFL CBT (Test of English as a Foreign language computer based test) with a minimum score of 230 including a minimum essay score of 4.5
  • TOEFL CBT with a minimum score of 250.
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) with an overall score of 70, with no part less than 60
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with an overall score of 65, with no part less than 60
