Many choose the general management major because it provides a comprehensive understanding of management that can take them anywhere. Others choose it because of the opportunity to design their own program, or plan to start their own business. If you're a budding entrepreneur, a broad-based understanding of business will position you to succeed.
Whether you’re primarily a people person or a numbers person, studying general management will help you develop and refine what already comes naturally.
Management is leading others to accomplish common goals. Today’s managers are people oriented, creative, adaptable — strong communicators who deal effectively with rapidly changing environments, work successfully with small and large teams, live and work by principles of ethics and social responsibility, and are aware of our responsibility to the environment.
About the General Management major
As a major in general management, you'll study topics such as marketing, organizational behaviour, introductory accounting, managing responsibly in a global environment, human resources management, policy and strategy, and probability and statistics. You will draw from fields such as history, English, political science, economics and sociology.
Gain a broad background in all areas of management and have the maximum flexibility to choose courses that fit your personal and career interests. In addition to the required courses, the major includes six 3000- or 4000-level management electives.
Dual campuses
We also offer the flexibility of dual campuses on which to study: Lethbridge and Calgary. Our Calgary Campus will meet the needs of working professionals with evening and weekend classes, while the Lethbridge campus is more traditional with an emphasis on daytime classes and a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities to explore. Both locations welcome international and mature students.
Additional opportunities
Students may also choose to add a minor to enhance your resume and be recognized on your transcript. Several minors complement this major, such as not-for-profit/social responsibility, new media, and population health.
Management Certificate
If you’re changing your focus professionally or if you do not wish to pursue an entire degree, complete a management certificate in this area of study.
