The Department of Biological Sciences provides you with a great deal of hands-on learning and engaging research, moving you beyond text books and lectures. Chemistry is often called the Central Science as it deals specifically with the 110 elements that comprise all matter. The air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, buildings we live in, cars we drive - our very bodies - are all made from these elements. Chemists pursue the study of matter down to the level of individual atoms, and, in particular, focus on molecules, which are aggregates of elements that act as larger units. Physics is the fundamental science. All other sciences and technologies rely on the principles of physics, by applying them to their systems of interest and/or by using technology based on them.

As an Education major a student develops a strong knowledge base in the subject area they intend to teach. They also receive in-depth preparation in how to teach, including both general and subject area instructional methods.

The following degrees can be combined with the Bachelor of Education (Science Education) degree:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • General Major in the Sciences
  • Geography
  • Physics

The Faculty of Education does not grant direct entry. Students complete two years in a Pre-Education program prior to applying for admission to the Faculty. After two years of Pre-Education, admission to the Faculty of Education is competitive and is based on your university grades and meeting other requirements. The required average will vary depending on your area of study.

These classes, or their equivalents, are pre-requisites for specific courses in this program, but are not required for general admission purposes: Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30.

Combined Degrees - BSc / BEd

As a BSc student, most of your courses will be in the sciences. You'll also have many great opportunities to work on research projects with your professors through independent studies or even summer research assistantships.

Students may meet the Science Education major requirements by completing a major in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physical Geography, Physics, or Urban and Regional Studies, or the General Major in the Sciences (at least 7 courses in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physical Geography, or Physics and 4 courses in each of two other disciplines in the Sciences).
