Program description

The objective of the Millwright Pre-apprenticeship program is to provide students with:

  • Theoretical trade knowledge which together with hands-on shop experience will enable students to go on to train for employment as capable and knowledgeable apprentices and entry-level workers in the trade.
  • Acquisition of safety skills and awareness.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to the Millwright trade.

General outcomes

At the end of the program, students will have:

  • Acquired safety skills and awareness.
  • Acquired practical hands-on experience with a variety of stationary and portable power tools.
  • A good knowledge base for an entry-level position in the job force.
  • Completed the theoretical requirements for Level I of the Millwright Apprenticeship program, 570 hours towards the student’s apprenticeship (pending approval of the Apprenticeship Board), and have the opportunity to write the first year Apprenticeship Exam.

Graduation requirements

Students must successfully complete all courses in the program and maintain an overall "C" average (70%).

Graduates of the program will receive a Yukon University certificate.

Students may also be offered technical credit towards a Yukon apprenticeship and the opportunity to challenge the Millwright Apprenticeship Level I (first-year) exam

  • Math 10 or equivalent AND English 10 or equivalent
    OR
  • Pass Level A Trades Entrance exam

To be admitted to Yukon University, students must be either 19 years of age or have graduated from high school in their home country. High school graduates are required to provide a high school graduation certificate, translated into English.

Students between the ages of 17 and 19 who have not completed high school in their home country, but have been out of school for a minimum of one year, may be accepted into Yukon University.

English requirements

  • IELTS 5.0 (in Academic Testing. No lower than 5.0 in each section) or
  • TOEFL iBT – 45
  • Adequate scores on the Yukon University English placement exam (available only at Yukon University)
  • Minimum 62% in Canadian High School English 12. Communications 12 is not accepted as meeting English requirements
  • Due to many IELTS and TOEFL testing centers being closed, we will temporarily accept Duolingo English Test (Duolingo 105=IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100= IELTS 5.0) and/or IELTS Indicator Test. Please contact for further details.
