The Developmental Psychology and Education program offers studies leading to the MA, MEd, and PhD degrees. Students have an opportunity to construct an overall perspective on developmental psychology and human development and their implications for practice with children in educational and other applied settings.

Students take foundation courses in human development and research methodology in consultation with their advisor. Elective courses cover a range of areas including cognitive, social, and emotional development; cognition and instruction (language, literacy, and mathematics); special education and adaptive instruction; developmental neuroscience; advanced research methodology and evaluation; and early childhood policy and programs, including child care. The MA program is designed for students wishing to pursue an academic or research-based career.

Program Requirements

Coursework. Students must complete 2.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs) as follows:

APD 1209H Research Methods and Thesis Preparation in Human Development and Applied Psychology (0.5 FCE)

JOI 1288H Intermediate Statistics and Research Design (0.5 FCE)

Two elective courses (1.0 FCE total) chosen in consultation with the student's advisor, which may include APD 2252H Individual Reading and Research (0.5 FCE).

Students who have not taken a previous course in human development are required to take APD 1201H Child and Adolescent Development (0.5 FCE) or an equivalent.

​In addition to their required 2.0 FCEs, students who have not taken a previous course in statistics are required to take JOI 1287H Introduction to Applied Statistics or an equivalent course.

Applicants must have an appropriate bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, with a final year average of at least mid-B from a recognized university. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL Paper-based Test Overall Score: 580, TWE: 4; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 85, with no part score below 80; Cambridge English Proficiency/Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 76 (with at least 22 in each component and 32 in the writing component).

Although most applicants will have a degree in psychology, applicants with an appropriate bachelor's degree in cognitive science, computer science, linguistics, or a helping profession such as occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, physiotherapy, nursing, social work, or another discipline relevant to their specific program of study are also eligible to apply for admission.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum scores required for the different TOEFL tests are:

Internet-based Test:

Minimum Requirement: total score of 100 + 22 on Writing

Discretionary Range: total score 89-99 +19 - 21 on Writing

Cambridge Assessment English C1: Advanced or C2: Proficiency: A minimum overall score of 180, with at least 170 in each component.

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): The minimum score required to meet our English facility requirement is an overall score of 70 and no part below 60.

Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): The minimum requirement is a total score of 4.5, and no part below 4.
