Educational psychology is a rich field of study, focusing on studies in inclusion, special education, learning and instructional sciences, human development, as well as research design, measurement, analysis, and evaluation.

This graduate program stream focuses on the application of knowledge and research in the psychological sciences to instruction, learner support and the design of optimal learning environments.

In the learning, development and instructional sciences program you will learn to:

Examine, critique, and apply contemporary research in human learning, self-regulation, motivation and development.

Apply psychological sciences to evidence-based practices across diverse instructional contexts.

Critically read, interpret, synthesize and evaluate research.

Communicate scholarly information in ways that are accessible to colleagues, clients and communities.

Gain in-depth knowledge of scholarly theory and research in a chosen area of focus.

Develop research competency and experience.

Please note:

This program is suitable for achieving advanced TQS standing for previously qualified teachers, but none of our programs lead to BC Teacher Certification.

This program does not allow you to become a school psychologist.

Applicants normally have an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. We require a four-year (60 units) baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution with a B+ average (6.0/9.0 GPA) in the last two years (30 units) of academic study. English language requirement: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. IELTS: Minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0. MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.

Applicants must have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic. Equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree. Any requirements specific to your program of study.

English Language requirements:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - For the internet-based TOEFL (IBT), we require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted.
