In Germanic and Slavic studies, you’ll study language, culture and history. You’ll learn academic and professional skills that will let you live and work abroad. You’ll attend field schools and take international practicums. You’ll examine all aspects of culture, from film and literature to language and folklore. We use dynamic learning that encourages intellectual curiosity and critical thinking.

Our Master’s degree comes in three distinct streams: Germanic, Slavic, and our new Holocaust focus.

Our new Holocaust studies stream is a critical inquiry into the events that shaped the 20th century. This program seeks to keep that vital memory alive. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of anti-Semitism, racism, religious intolerance, homophobia and the stigmatization of the mentally and physically disabled communities.

You’ll complete either a thesis or a non-thesis based project. Both options have a required practicum component. This practicum can be completed at home or abroad in places like Berlin or Budapest. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend our I-Witness field school.
