The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations offers graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in two fields:

  • Ancient Near Eastern Studies
  • Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Courses are offered and faculty conduct research in the following areas: Egyptology, including archaeology, language, history, and religion; Mesopotamia and the Near East, including archaeology and Assyriology; Syro-Palestinian archaeology; Hebrew and Judaic studies, including Biblical and Rabbinic Hebrew, history, and religion; Aramaic and Syriac studies, including language, history, and religion; Arabic studies; Islamic studies; history of the Islamic world and the modern Middle East; Islamic art; Persian studies; and Turkish studies, including Ottoman language and history.

Program Requirements:

Program of study is determined in consultation with the department and includes written and oral general examinations. These examinations should be taken no later than January in the year following the completion of coursework for the PhD program.

Students are required to demonstrate reading comprehension in two languages of modern scholarship (typically French and German), the first by the end of their first year in residence, and the second by the end of their second year of residence. A language other than French or German may be substituted with approval of the Academic Advisor and the Graduate Coordinator. In some cases, the department may require competence in another language relevant to the student's program. The choice of language(s) must be approved by the department.

Applicants can admit directly to the doctoral program from a bachelor's degree for highly qualified candidates (minimum average A- required) in some departments. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL Paper-based Test Overall Score: 580, TWE: 4; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 85, with no part score below 80; Cambridge English Proficiency/Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 76 (with at least 22 in each component and 32 in the writing component).

Admission via one of two routes:

MA degree in a relevant program from a recognized university with at least an A– average or equivalent in courses taken for the MA program.

Direct entry from a bachelor's degree for exceptionally qualified applicants, at the discretion of the department.

Ability to conduct independent research.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum scores required for the different TOEFL tests are:

Internet-based Test:

Minimum Requirement: total score of 100 + 22 on Writing

Discretionary Range: total score 89-99 +19 - 21 on Writing

Cambridge Assessment English C1: Advanced or C2: Proficiency: A minimum overall score of 180, with at least 170 in each component.

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): The minimum score required to meet our English facility requirement is an overall score of 70 and no part below 60.

Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): The minimum requirement is a total score of 4.5, and no part below 4.

The application fee payment deadline for a 2021-2022 academic year degree program start (September 2021) is November 30, 2020. Your supporting documents must be submitted by December 11, 2020.
