Program Overview

The Professional Master of Industrial Relations (PMIR) degree program is a part-time program for professionals in Labour Relations, Human Resources Management and Organizational Development. This program is designed especially for experienced professionals and managers in the field who wish to gain new skills and knowledge for career advancement. The PMIR provides participants with advanced skills and knowledge to implement solutions to current and emerging workplace issues.

Professional Master of Industrial Relations (MIR): There are two semesters in the Professional MIR program; fall/winter (Sept-April) and summer (May-June). Eleven courses are required for degree completion and the normal course load per semester is two courses. Students attend classes in Kingston one Friday and Saturday each month from September to April and for two weeks in summer semester. The Professional MIR program will normally take about 30-36 months to complete.

Method of Completion

  • Course work, seminars.
  • Students have the option to complete a research project.

Academic Prerequisites: 4-year bachelor’s honour degree in any discipline. Minimum upper second-class standing (B+/GPA 3.3), over the last two years of study), and demonstrated evidence of strong academic potential. For international students, if required, a TOEFL total score of at least 600 (paper-based) or TOEFL iBT minimum scores of: writing (24/30); speaking (22/30); reading (22/30); listening (20/30), for a total of 88/120. Applicants must have the minimum score in each test as well as the minimum overall score.

Applications are accepted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. The normal minimum academic qualification for admission to the Professional MIR program is a four-year bachelor’s degree with upper second-class standing (B+) (or equivalent) from a recognized university. Professional MIR candidates must also have three years of full-time employment experience in a related field (or equivalent).

Candidates, with significant employment experience in HR/LR, who do not meet the normal minimum academic qualification, must provide additional evidence of strong academic potential. This evidence normally involves completion of two courses at the senior undergraduate or graduate level, with a minimum B+ standing in each course, or completion of the Graduate Record Admission Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), with a minimum score at the 75 percentile in the verbal and analytical categories.

Test Requirements
