Programme Aims and Features

The Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (BChinMed) programme is a six-year full-time degree programme that aims to provide systematic and professional training for students to become competent Chinese medicine practitioners who are able to provide Chinese medicine healthcare services to the community, as well as to meet the challenges of the modernisation of Chinese medicine. The main features of the curriculum include

  • Focus on Chinese-medicine teaching supplemented with biomedical-sciences knowledge
  • Frequent and early clinical training
  • Comprehensive clinical-skills training
  • Broadening students’ horizons beyond professional study
  • Arousing students’ interests in scientific research
  • Trilingual teaching medium

BChinMed students will spend their first five years on campus systematically studying a full curriculum of Chinese-medicine courses, modern biomedical-sciences courses and general-education courses. Students in the sixth year will undertake a 40-week clinical clerkship at the affiliated teaching hospital of a first-tier TCM University in mainland China.

The School is dedicated to providing early clinical contact to its students and emphasising the integration of theories and practice. Clinical attachments involve observation of out-patient practice under the supervision of teachers. Students will undertake a 4-week Junior Clerkship at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital during their fourth year. Field trips and Chinese medicine dispensary practicum will also be arranged for students to study the indigenous TCM herbs in the wild under natural conditions in mainland China and gain practical experience at Chinese medicine dispensary.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of the BChinMed programme who have passed the Licensing Examination are qualified for registration as Chinese medicine practitioners with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong.

Career Prospects

After passing the Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination, BChinMed graduates are eligible to engage in private practice or to seek employment in TCM clinics in both the public and private sectors. They are also qualified to fill research and development posts in TCM pharmaceutical trading and manufacturing companies, or to work in managerial, marketing, sales, insurance or advertising positions in TCM-related businesses. Some opt to pursue postgraduate studies or become academics in tertiary institutes.

English Language Requirement: IELTS - An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module; TOEFL - A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English.

  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 31 points out of 45 or equivalent
  • GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 2A 1B level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language or equivalent
  • SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1350; SAT Subject Tests: 550 – 600 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

  • Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;
  • Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or
  • Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

  • Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or
  • Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

TOEFL: A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 583 in the paper-based test.

Additional Requirements / Assessment: Biology, Chemistry or Physics is preferred; and
a good command of written and spoken Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua).
