WHAT IS ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING?

Small, lightweight, portable devices like Smartphones and tablets combine wireless technology with processing power to provide internet, communications and leisure functionality while on the move. They are now driving how we live, work and play. Combining low power consumption with microchip design, telecommunication and control circuitry (hardware) and the operating system software, they are the ultimate electronic system. CIT’s CR 061 course is designed to equip technologists to work at this level.

About The Course

Electronic engineering is used for the collection, processing, and transmission of information. From the most sophisticated machines in industry, to cars, to household appliances, to personal items, all have the same thing in common: they are “intelligent”. On a printed circuit board (PCB), surrounded by analogue and digital circuitry, there is a microprocessor, or maybe several, which has a clock (heartbeat). On every cycle the microprocessor executes an instruction from whatever programming it is running (software) – this ability is what makes the system intelligent. Intelligence, control and communications, theory and practice form the core material of this course.

The course begins with digital electronics in Year 1 and progresses through microprocessors, PICs, to firmware development and digital systems design. In parallel, you will learn fundamentals of Control and Telecommunications theory and apply them using intelligent systems platforms. The result is a rounded education in electronic systems combining intelligence, control/feedback and communications.

All Level 7/8 academic years consist of 2 semesters with 6 modules in each semester. Modules can have a continuous assessment element to them and also a final exam. Other modules are 100% continuously assessed. Continuous assessment can consist of laboratory work, mini-exams, reports, presentations, etc. the emphasis is on keeping learners engaged with the course for the whole term.

In its report of January 2012, the Irish Government Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGRSN) states that the country will increasingly depend on Information Communications Technology (ICT) graduates in all areas. Nationally, 75,000 people are employed in 8,000 ICT companies. The CIT

Growth in knowledge and techniques of these disciplines has been explosive, generating a wide range of exciting careers for both men and women as technicians and technician-engineers. Electronic Engineering careers cover a stimulating and challenging range of disciplines including Electronics, Computer Engineering & Software, Communications & Telecommunications, Control & Automation, and Electronics Manufacturing, all of which are included in the range of courses.

Bachelor Degree holders can participate in development support, testing of complex electronics equipment and in supporting computer and communications hardware and software. The qualification can provide highly satisfying and well-paid career opportunities for graduates.

  • score the necessary CAO points and
  • meet the minimum entry requirements

Leaving Certificate in five subjects i.e. Grade O6 or H7 in five subjects. The five subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.

English Language Proficiency score for applicants whose first language is not English. i.e. IELTS Certificate, Minimum accepted score = 6.0.
