This MSc programme offers students a critical understanding of key issues and theoretical debates on development and the Global South.

  • designed to provide students with an advanced knowledge of key development challenges, potentials and contestations in the Global South at a range of scales and informed by local experiences of development, change and sustainability, including debates on decoloniality and social movements.
  • strong emphasis is placed on developing students’ applied skills in geospatial technology and an understanding of their societal application to development-related issues, research and to informing practice, planning and policy making in the Global South.

Careers & Employability

The MSc Development and the Global South is designed to provide students with the key knowledge and practical transferable skillsets that will be a benefit in many careers. Graduates of this programme may progress to careers in:

  • Further research, whether academic or professional
  • NGOs focused on the Global South
  • International aid, development or humanitarian agencies or organisations
  • Global multilateral agencies (United Nations, World Bank, UNICEF, UN-Habitat etc.)
  • Uni- or multinational think-tanks
  • Private sector research or corporate social responsibility divisions

This program is aimed at students who wish to develop a career in the field of international development within governmental or non-governmental organisations, or to do further research in the field of studies on global development. We value and encourage our students to be active, motivated, autonomous learners who have a critical and reflective approach towards the problems of the Global South, global poverty and the wide range of proposed solutions. We aim to provide a learning environment that will encourage students to challenge commonplace understandings and reflect on different approaches to developing their autonomous understanding of key concepts and debates in the field of studies on development and the Global South.

Working groups, fieldwork based research in Vietnam or Brazil, collective discussion and autonomous conceptions of outputs like research essays, presentations and student-led conferences are key elements of the programme’s design. This entails a focus on personal development and critical learning, favoured by the interdisciplinary nature of the themes raised and by our international teaching group.

Programme Outcomes

  • Gain critical reading skills in the area of Development and the Global South.
  • Obtain knowledge of current challenges relating to development in the Global South at a range of scales, informed by local experiences of development, change and sustainability, including debates on decoloniality and social movements
  • Develop strong writing skills in the form of academic articles and a thesis.
  • Learn research techniques and methodologies.
  • Learn field-based investigation methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrate competency in a range of geospatial technologies, with a particular emphasis on the application of Geographical Information Systems.
  • Establish contacts with development sector actors and policy-makers in Ireland, Vietnam and Brazil.

The normal requirement for entry to a Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. In addition course work and examinations may also be specified by the College at entry; normally these have to be satisfactorily completed in the first year of a Master’s degree programme. IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +. In the computer based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT).

Good academic grades (your transcript should include grades for each subject taken).

Names and contact details of two referees who can assess your intellectual ability, maturity and motivation. At least one of these should be a member of academic staff at your current institution.

Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University

  • A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
  • A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section

Cambridge Examinations: English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 180+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English).

Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item of both skills profiles.
