Research in small animal medicine focuses on companion animal health and well-being through better understanding of disease and therapy, understanding and promotion of benefits of human-animal bond and reduction of unwanted and problem pets through community education. Research in these areas focus on the identification and understanding of aetiology; epidemiology and pathogenesis of diseases affecting companion animals; development of novel and specific diagnostic tests for detection disease causing agents and monitoring and implementation of newer treatment options and protocols. Expertise of the research group, spans many disciplines including internal medicine, cardiology, reproduction, diagnostic imaging, zoonoses and epidemiology.

The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree (with honours) in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.000, or the applicant without sufficient academic qualification can be admitted into the programme subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

Candidate must have a Bachelor degree (with honours), or DVM or Bachelor of Science degree in related field from UPM or any academic institution recognised by UPM university and have achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.00

Candidate without basic requirements may apply, however, acceptance is upon approval by the School of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM or;

Candidate in the final semester of a Bachelor degree programme in the field of veterinary, animal, or health science or human medicine or other related fields with good academic standing throughout the study programme may be considered for admission, subject to current CGPA or equivalent or other requirement as stipulated from time to time
