UCOL's Bachelor of Nursing will provide you with learning opportunities that enable you to become an effective registered nurse, providing competent, comprehensive nursing care.

When you enrol in UCOL’s Bachelor of Nursing programme you'll be assigned your own personal tutor to guide you right through your nursing journey. They’ll support you through the curriculum, which includes up to 160 hours of clinical placements in your first year. Later in the programme these clinical experiences will include primary health care, medical and surgical, and mental health settings.

Course Information

This programme consist of 360 credits. The courses includes:

Year 1

  • Society And Health in Aotearoa/New Zealand (15 Credits)
  • Professional Nursing: An Introduction (15 Credits)
  • Bioscience for Health Professionals (25 Credits)
  • Fundamental Skills for Nursing (25 Credits)
  • Communication and Education for Professional Practice (20 Credits)
  • Clinical Practice (Introduction) (20 Credits, 160 hours practical experience)

Year 2

  • Aotearoa/New Zealand Health Care System and Professional Practice (20 Credits)
  • Nursing Science and Practice Skills (35 Credits)
  • Person-centred Care: The Mental Health Context (15 Credits)
  • Clinical Practice (Medical/Surgical) (25 Credits, 240 hours practical experience)
  • Clinical Practice (Mental Health) (25 Credits, 240 hours practical experience)

Year 3

  • Primary Health Care (15 Credits)
  • Preparing for Registration: Promoting Practice Improvement and Lifelong Learning (15 Credits)
  • People with Acute and/or Complex Care Needs: A Partnership Approach (15 Credits)
  • Chronic Conditions and Person-centred Care (15 Credits)
  • Clinical Practice (Primary Health Care) (24 Credits, 240 hours practical experience)
  • Clinical Practice (Transition) (36 Credits, 360 hours practical experience)

Industry Connections

The Nurse Education Team have strong links with industry and students have a wide range of Clinical experience in Mental Health, Medical/Surgical, Aged Care and Primary Health environments across the three years of study.

International students will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure they meet New Zealand University Entrance requirements. In addition, in accordance with NCNZ (2017) and the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act [HPCA] (2003) requirements, international students whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the general medium of instruction is not English, will be required to provide documentary evidence of proficiency in English (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).

English language Requirement: IELTS - Academic: Score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.5; TOEFL (iBT) - Score of 83 (Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20, Writing 24); OET - Minimum Grade C+ or 300 in all subtests; NZCEL - Level 5; and Pearson Test of English (Academic) - Score of 58 with no band lower than 58.

Applicants under 20 years of age:

For international applicants under 20 years of age who do not hold NCEA, International Academic Qualifications Entry Criteria apply (Entry requirements vary from country to country).
