Civil infrastructure has the ability to change the landscape of our planet, from tunnels to skyscrapers. The Master of Civil Engineering (MCivilEng) offers professional practice and knowledge in infrastructure design and analysis, and advanced skills in project and stakeholder management. The flexible programme gives you the opportunity to specialise in a specific area, or develop a broad background in civil engineering.

Students will also gain understanding of complex issues that face our society, including sustainable engineering, risk mitigation for natural disasters, and bicultural perspectives of engineering in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Construction Management is the overall planning, co-ordination and control of a project from beginning to completion. Construction Project Management is aimed at meeting a client's requirements in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project.

Construction Management professionals undertake a wide range of tasks, including:

  • Specifying project objectives and plans. Defining the scope, budget and schedule for a project;
  • Setting performance requirements and selecting project participants
  • Employing procurement methods to maximise the efficient use of resources (labour, materials and equipment, co-ordinating and controlling the planning, design, estimating, contracting and construction
  • Developing and implementing effective communications and mechanisms for avoiding and resolving conflicts among those participating in the project.

The Construction Management programme offers graduates study leading to the Master of Engineering degree. The focus is on professional programmes that combine theory and application with a strong emphasis in applied management. The master's programme is an advanced curriculum designed to allow students to tailor a portion of the specialisation requirements to meet individual interests and goals.

Further study

Graduates of the MCivilEng will be able to continue on to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a number of related engineering subjects, for example in Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

Career Opportunities

Because of the flexible structure of the Master of Civil Engineering, students can tailor their degree towards a research or professional career in industry. Graduates will have general or specialist knowledge in civil engineering, which can be applied to structural, geotechnical, transport, construction, water, and/or fire engineering divisions.

Engaging biculturalism is also a strong component of the MCivilEng, which will give graduates a cultural understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand and skills in engaging mana whenua and iwi in building projects, making them ideal for future project management work in the industry.
