In physics we try to reveal the secrets of nature, from the microcosm of elementary particles to the macrocosm of astrophysics. Between these two extremes there is a wealth of subjects, ranging from biophysics at cellular level and medical research to the development of new understanding in fields such as nanotechnology and climate. At present, these and many other areas are advancing in exciting ways.

Programme components

Master of Science in Physics gives you a unique opportunity to get directly involved in internationally recognized research groups, and access to high standard infrastructure.

The specializations in physics at NTNU is closely related to the Department of Physics' research activities.

The Department of Physics is organized in seven research divisions:

Job prospects

With a Master's degree in Physics you are attractive in the labour market, both in the public and private sectors, in areas connected to research, consultancy, engineering, and education.

During the Master's Programme in physics you develop working methods that are useful in a broad range of jobs, and employers value physicists due to their comprehensiveness and ability to approach various problems analytically and systematically.

To some extent your specialization determines which part of the labour market that is most relevant. In general the programme provides a solid foundation for further research. The technological industry offers numerous jobs that require experimental and computer simulation competence.

An alternative is to supplement the MSc degree in Physics with practical pedagogic education; hence you will qualify for teaching in upper secondary school.

For admission to the programme, you are required to hold a Bachelor's degree in physics, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits. Alternatively, you may be admitted with a Bachelor's degree not in physics, but with a sufficient formal background in calculus based physics (a minimum of 80 ECTS credits) and mathematics (a minimum of 30 ECTS credits).

To be eligible to apply you will need to have at least one of the requisites in the list below:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

Minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test
minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test

IELTS (International English Language Testing Service)

academic test with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
