This is a course with an innovative approach to biology dealing with current issues to motivate students. The focus is on key concepts in biology, including topics on genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, human physiology, evolution and ecology. The theory is set in interesting contexts, with the ethical and social implications of the science discussed fully. The course has a dedicated website and multimedia resources, along with online activities to develop and support the related science, mathematics and ICT skills. For those wishing to pursue a career in the biological sciences, Biology A Level is essential; other scientific subjects and Mathematics are recommended. However, A Level Biology also complements the social sciences and humanities very well.
In the first year, three modules are studied comprising: Module 2: Foundations in Biology; Module 3: Exchange and Transport; Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease. In the second year, a further two modules are studied to complete the full A Level: Module 5: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy; Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems. Across both years, students will produce a portfolio of their practical work to fulfill the requirements of the Practical Endorsement in Biology. Necessary techniques are covered through: Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Biology. These modules are mapped onto three written papers, which will be examined at the end of the two-year course: Paper 01: Biological Processes; Paper 02: Biological Diversity; Paper 03: Unified Biology. The majority of A-Level students will progress onto a Higher Education Degree at University.
