Wichita State’s undergraduate certificate in assistive technology and accessible design is an interdisciplinary program useful for any major wanting to create innovations that improve learning, working and daily living for people with disabilities. Students will learn from faculty across campus and work with service providers to design and create products and equipment such as communication boards, specialized learning materials, mounting systems, electronic devices, walkers, pencil holders, screen readers, communication programs and much more.

Curriculum

This 18-credit-hour program includes curriculum from several disciplines, including the health professions, innovation design, engineering, sociology and psychology.

  • Introduction to Technology and Innovation
  • Applied Human Anatomy
  • Design Thinking and Innovation
  • Accessible Design
  • Ergonomics or Human Factors Psychology
  • Social Consequences of Disability
  • Engineering majors can earn both Engineer of 2020 Innovation and Service Learning credits.

Students completing the certificate program receive an appropriately-worded certificate from the university and a notation is made on the student's transcript when the certificate has been awarded.

Students seeking this certificate must be admitted to the university or in a non-degree status. All university policies relative to admission apply. Students pursuing an undergraduate certificate must file a plan of study for the certificate program with the undergraduate coordinator before half of the required credit hours are completed. Students may apply certificate coursework toward a degree program.

  • Students who have completed high school (or will soon graduate from high school) are eligible to apply OR
  • If you have taken the SAT or ACT, you may apply during your final year of high school. SAT: A combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score and Math score of 1060 or higher AND a minimum score of 490 or higher on each of the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. ACT: A composite score of 21 or higher on the English, Math, Science, and Reading sections AND a minimum score of 18 or higher on each of the sections for English, Math, Science, and Reading.

All international undergraduate students at Wichita State University are required to demonstrate proficiency in English before beginning full-time academic study. English proficiency may be demonstrated in the following ways:

  • Obtain a TOEFL score of 530 or higher on the paper-based test;
  • Obtain a TOEFL score of 72 or higher on the Internet-based test;
  • Obtain an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher;
  • Obtain a PTE Academic score of 49 or higher.
