The Doctor of Philosophy program in epidemiology requires a minimum of 78 s.h. of graduate credit. All doctoral students must successfully complete a qualifying examination, a comprehensive examination, a dissertation prospectus, and a dissertation. The research topic and content, which vary depending on the program of study, must be approved by the student's dissertation committee. Other degree requirements include approved electives chosen from Department of Epidemiology courses (prefix EPID) and other University of Iowa courses.

Students are required to attend 80 percent of all Department of Epidemiology seminar meetings and journal club meetings for five semesters; attendance during a student's enrollment in the M.S. program does not count toward this requirement. Students also must present a departmental seminar on their dissertation research and an oral presentation or scientific poster presentation at an international, national, regional, state, or University level before they may graduate.

Focus Area

Each Ph.D. student must declare a focus area. Working with the focus area coordinator, students develop a study plan that will enable them to develop substantive knowledge in a specific area that will lead to important original research. Focus areas for Ph.D. students include chronic disease/life course epidemiology, clinical and health services epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, and injury epidemiology. For lists of required course work in each focus area, see Ph.D. in Epidemiology on the department's website. Individualized Ph.D. programs may be completed with the department's approval.

Career Advancement:

The program prepares graduate students for careers as scientists, teachers, and practitioners of epidemiologic methods. Employment opportunities exist in academic institutions; local, state, and federal health agencies; and in private enterprises.

Chronic Disease/Life course Epidemiology

The PhD student in epidemiology should attain skills specifically for the practice of epidemiology in research, teaching and practical settings. With this in mind, the Chronic Disease/Life course Epidemiology PhD Emphasis Area is designed to prepare students for a career in which they will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

Critically appraise the epidemiologic literature

Describe and characterize the major known determinants of common and important chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Explain how chronic disease can have its beginnings early in life and how various phases of the life course affect the natural history and outcomes of chronic disease

Clinical and Health Services Epidemiology

The Clinical and Health Services Epidemiology focus area in the University Of Iowa Department Of Epidemiology is designed to prepare students for a career in which they will:

Evaluate need, use, performance and outcomes of health and healthcare products, procedures, interventions, services and programs

Advance methods for quantifying health effects of products, interventions, services and programs

Genetic Epidemiology

The Genetic Epidemiology focus area in the University Of Iowa Department Of Epidemiology is designed to prepare students for a career in which they will:

Advance methods for quantifying genetic variants and assessing their effect on health, interventions, services and programs

Contribute to optimizing prediction of disease using contemporary approaches in genetics
