Genomics and computational biology are now at the center of biomedical research. These disciplines take a holistic approach to ask about the origins, functions, and interactions of whole systems, using both experimental and theoretical work. Therefore, these studies require knowledge, skills, and, most importantly, synthesis and integration of biology, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and engineering.

This synthesis and integration requires a new generation of scientists that thrives in cross-disciplinary research. This can include molecular, cellular, and organismal biology (including genetics), mathematics, statistics, chemistry, and engineering. The goal of the GCB program is to train students that are experts in one or more of these disciplines and well versed in the others. We provide a comprehensive training program in Genomics and Computational Biology that gives PhD and MD/PhD students a broad foundation in the biological and quantitative sciences along with practical experience in computational and experimental genomics. The knowledge gained in this program will serve students in their careers as technology progresses.

The GCB curriculum combines several required courses specifically designed for the GCB program and additional courses available from other programs. In general, the core courses are taken during the first year, although this is not required. In the first year, students take three courses and participate in one lab rotation each semester. During the second year, the lab rotation is replaced by pre-dissertation research in the student’s thesis lab under the direction of their mentor.

Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.

Admissions to our program are based on basic training including molecular biology, genetics, statistics/mathematics, and/or computer science.

A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
