Advance your expertise and skill in music composition and theory. You'll broaden and deepen your critical knowledge in music theory, history, research and compositional study.

Our fully accredited graduate composition program is tailored for those with undergraduate preparation and exceptional promise in writing music. Gain critical and theoretical knowledge in music composition, theory, history, research and technique. And do it all with the help of accomplished faculty with years of experience in the field.

You'll have opportunities to have your creative work presented during campus-sponsored concerts and state and regional conferences.

Located in a modern 119,000-square-foot facility, you'll enjoy state-of-the-art resources, including our 500-seat concert hall with a 61-rank Casavant organ, 100-seat recital hall, digital audio technology labs, recording facilities and music resource center.

We offer a limited number of graduate assistantships with a tuition waiver of up to 20 credit hours and a stipend of $10,300. If awarded, you may teach 100-level courses or assist directors of large ensembles. It offers great experience for students hoping to teach at the college level.

Our program prepares you for many careers in music composition, performance and education. Alumni have gone on to work for music publishing companies like Montoya Music and ADJ Publishers. Others have earned doctorates and secured tenure-track positions at places like Texas Christian University and the University of North Texas. And others have their works performed at conferences and festivals like the Midwest Clinic and Texas Music Educators Association.

Candidates are expected to hold a degree in a related area with a GPA of 3.0.

In addition to university requirements for graduate admission, applicants for the Master of Music degree must meet the following requirements in the School of Music:

Possess a completed undergraduate music degree or other degree with at least 40 semester hours with a grade point average of 3.0 or better in music studies.

Submit three letters of recommendation and a writing example (e.g., term paper from undergraduate studies) to the School of Music.

Complete audition requirements according to degree concentration, as follows, arranged through the School of Music:

  • Composition applicants must submit a portfolio of their compositions accompanied by a CD or online recording of submitted compositions.
  • Conducting applicants must submit a DVD or online recording of their conducting.
  • Music Education applicants must complete an interview with the School of Music Graduate Coordinator.
  • Performance applicants must audition with the appropriate faculty member or performance area.
  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7.

English Language Requirements:

  • (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for admission with stipulations or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission.
  • (IELTS): A score of 5.5 required for admission with stipulations or 6.5 for regular admission.
  • Pearson Test of English: A score of 44 for admission with stipulations or 53 for regular admission.
  • Michigan English Test (MET): A score of 52 is required for regular admission.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission.
  • Advanced Placement (AP): A score of 4 on the English Language or English Literature Exams.
