The Genetic Counseling Master's Program (GCMP) at Rutgers University is a 22 month graduate program for students wishing to pursue a career in the growing and exciting field of genetic counseling. Our training involves rigorous coursework, a variety of clinical rotations offered throughout the state, and a Master's research project. Housed within the Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Program, our program provides students with resources from the Graduate School – New Brunswick, as well the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Our dedicated academic and clinical faculty is experienced genetic professions, representing a variety of specialties. As the only genetic counseling training program in New Jersey, our students have the opportunity to work with a network of talented genetic counselors working in a great variety of professional settings.

Curriculum Overview

The GCMP curriculum is designed to provide a challenging, thorough, and well balanced training to our graduate students. The majority of courses have been designed specifically for our genetic counseling students to ensure the effectiveness and specificity of our training. Students will take a four course genetic counseling course that spans both years. Science curriculum includes Human Genetics and Medical Genetics courses, as well as courses designed to emphasize other specialty areas (Reproductive Genetics and Cancer Genetic Counseling). Our program also take advantage of upon the offerings of Rutgers University by including courses offered by other professional schools including GSAPP and the School of Social Work thus demonstrating our approach to cross disciplinary training and the value of exposing our students to a variety of Rutgers resources.

A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test score is required if your undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country.

  • The minimum paper-based TOEFL score is 550. The minimum computer-based TOEFL score is 213
  • The minimum IBT-internet based TOEFL is Writing 22, Speaking 23, Reading 21, Listening 17.
  • An acceptable IELTS score is bandwidth 7.
