Hopeful future university students may already know that James Cook University is one of Australia’s leading academic institutions. However, they may not know that its Singapore satellite location is equally amazing, located in an exciting spot in the middle of the Asian city-state.

James Cook University Singapore, or JCU Singapore, is a private education institution offering 23 courses and programmes across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university is welcoming and always looking to the future. It’s been recognised for its outstanding research on ecology and the tropics, and students who care about the environment and want to make a positive ecological impact in South-East Asia will definitely find their place.

JCU Singapore prides itself on teaching excellence, great student satisfaction rates and a culture where everyone from every background is welcome. They are currently around 17,000 students enrolled, and 4,289 of these students are international. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) gives JCU Singapore an international outlook rating of 78.7 per cent, and it’s clear to everyone who attends the university that JCU Singapore cares a lot about making every student feel welcome.

There is a range of scholarships and bursaries for international students that should provide excellent support, and this support will be backed up by talented, focused tutors and lecturers with quality learning resources and strong teaching techniques.

With a campus that’s perfect for city life and enjoying nature, JCU Singapore provides exciting adventures and quiet places for study and relaxation. The university understands that good student welfare is very important for academic achievement, so mental health support services are as easy to access as JCU Singapore’s various study rooms, libraries, and labs.

Students can also expect great employment prospects after they graduate from JCU Singapore, especially if they’re interested in protecting the environment and fighting back against climate change. This new campus, away from main JCU location in Australia cares just as much about community and teaches every student to be proactive. This prepares them for the working work throughout their studies and helping them achieve not just their academic dreams, but their professional dreams too.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality and level of education at JCU Singapore is second to none. It’s ranked in the top 200 universities in the world for impact by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. JCU Singapore puts an emphasis on environmental recovery and letting students make a difference in local communities. It provides a perfect mix of quality teaching in the classroom, hands-on learning, and great research resources.

It also hopes to allow students who may not previously have had access to higher education to gain a university qualification. This means students from disadvantaged communities will be able to make a difference after graduating, in their own lives and in the lives of others.

The student to faculty member ratio is 12 to one, so the university’s teaching expertise is spread evenly across students, and nobody feels left out. Every person who chooses to study at JCU Singapore can enjoy focused, targeted, and caring teaching that helps them to excel in every way possible.

Standout areas of research mostly revolve around JCU’s involvement with ecological development. It’s ranked as the best university in the world for marine and freshwater biology by the Centre for World University Rankings, and it’s ranked at number two in the world for biodiversity conservation. For students who want to explore these areas, the great facilities and high-quality teaching at JCU Singapore will be impossible to beat.

It’s also the first private education institution in Singapore to have been awarded an Edustar by the Edustar Trust (back in 2015). This Edustar was granted because lecturers and other staff members had been working so hard to improve JCU Singapore, from the way it was organised and the student services available all the way to how things were taught.

Other awards won by JCU Singapore include the People’s Association Community Spirit Award in 2016, which recognised the university’s movements benefitting local Asian communities, and the Bronze Singapore Health Award in 2012.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for James Cook University Singapore vary depending on which course an applicant would like to study. In general, however, an undergraduate applicant must have completed 12 years of school to a good standard.

Students should browse the course pages and discover what the university entry requirements are for their specific programme before applying. For example, an applicant wishing to study a BA in Psychological Science must have completed 12 years of schooling, including the completion of an English language subject at a GCE grade of D or higher.

To give a postgraduate example, a student applying for a postgraduate certificate in Diabetes Studies would need a degree in Nursing and would need to share any other relevant university qualifications to AQF level seven or above (and proof of these qualifications). Certain health qualifications from other countries would also be accepted, and applicants should also have spent at least a year working in their chosen field since completing their undergraduate degree.

JCU Singapore also offers Pathway programmes. These special entrance schemes are designed to help different types of people access university, especially struggling students in the local area. To give an example, entry requirements for the Postgraduate Qualifying Programme for Business include qualifications within 12 credit points of a relevant AQF level seven business degree.

If applicants have any questions about the admissions process or the university requirements that will/will not apply to them, they can contact JCU Singapore’s admissions team for more information and get any important questions answered before submitting an application.

  3. Receiving an offer letter and student contract.
  4. Accepting the contract offer.
  5. Applying for a student pass for entry to Singapore.

  8. Enjoying Orientation and Reporting Week.
  9. Officially beginning the course of study.

When the application is submitted, international students will also need to share supporting documents with JCU Singapore to confirm that they are eligible for university admission. The exact documents needed will vary between courses, but the following items will probably be requested:

  • A non-refundable application fee of SGD 250
  • A copy of academic certificates and transcripts
  • IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson Test results if applying from a non-English-speaking country
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport
  • One recent passport-sized photograph

Applicants for postgraduate programmes and research opportunities will also need to share their latest CV and two academic references. Plus, if any of the required documentation is not in English for undergraduates or postgraduates, then a translation must be provided, too.

Scholarships & Funding

There are lots of scholarships available to international students at JCU Singapore. To help people from less wealthy backgrounds, these scholarships are fully inclusive, but they do still have certain terms and conditions that must be met to be eligible. One of the most popular university scholarships is the Merit Scholarship, which rewards academic success and covers fees and funding for one academic year in one of three ways:

  • A 100 per cent scholarship for one academic year
  • A 50 per cent scholarship for one academic year
  • A 25 per cent scholarship for one academic year

The Merit Scholarship is open to all new domestic and international students, and it’s also available to international students who are in the final stages of their Pathway programme. There are also the HDR Scholarships, awarded competitively using JCU Singapore’s special system and received by the students who rank at the top of the list academically.

The eligibility requirements for scholarships change depending on where the student is applying from, but all applicants must have met the entry requirements for their course and submitted all relevant documentation with their application form.

Accommodation

Singapore is one of the most exciting locations in South-East Asia for international students to live and study. There are lots of student accommodation options, some offered and organised by JCU Singapore and some through private rental agreements. Whichever route a student chooses, it’s important that they know where they’ll be staying before they arrive in Singapore.

In terms of university accommodation organised with the help of JCU, students should know that the university works with a few different Singapore housing companies to help international applicants find a comfortable place to live in the right area, with easy access to classes and campus.

There are five different types of accommodation offered by these companies, and the cost of living each month will depend on where the option a student chooses is located, and which facilities are available to them. The accommodation types are:

  • Apartments
  • Condos
  • Hostels
  • Landed properties
  • Serviced apartments

For example, each room at the Homeydays complex comes with air conditioning, a study table and a wardrobe. The monthly rent for a single master bedroom with an attached ensuite is around SGD 1,690, while a single common bedroom with a shared bathroom will range from SGD 1,280 to SGD 1,390 per month.

The Housing Development Board Apartment scheme is also available to international students who hold a student pass. This scheme offers students whole units or single rooms in a student house. Generally, this option is cheaper than privately-owned accommodation, but there are specific guidelines for students if they wish to explore this option, and further research is required.

Student Support

JCU Singapore is committed to making sure that students feel supported, from their mental health to their academic abilities. The university understands that students can do much better and focus much more easily when they have good student support services available to them.

The university’s psychology clinic is an excellent student support option. Professional and expert help, including the use of evidence-based methods like CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), is used to support students through issues such as depression and anxiety, anger, and family issues. There is a standard assessment fee of SGD 300 for the service, plus an hourly fee of SGD 25 once the student support programme begins.

The Counselling and Progressions Office offers private mental health support services including an individual, one-on-one student guide counselling option, wellness workshops, self-help and community resources. There are also student advice services for those who are struggling academically, and skills workshops on everything from exam revision to essay writing.

The university’s centralised student feedback portal also gives attendees the option to raise concerns about anything and everything. There are student services at JCU Singapore to cover all situations and occasions, and these services make sure no one is ever left out or unheard on campus.

And, it was ranked at number one for full-time employment and number two for international graduate earnings.

Since 2015, the JCU Singapore Alumni Association has strengthened and improved its network of students who study and remain in Singapore. The association is connected to the university, and it’s a great way for current students to access the expertise of graduates who have gone on to become working professionals. Through regularly organised events, current students and past students can swap stories, network, and learn.

JCU Singapore doesn’t just have great alumni and strong connections with employers. It also offers students a huge range of career services from day one of their studies and holds them to professional standards in the classroom, preparing them for the world of work. The university offers everything from CV writing workshops to sessions with a career guide, exploring career options and mapping out a future.

Some of the best employment services and career-boosting options available during a student’s education are internship opportunities and mentorship programmes, and there are lots of these for international students at JCU Singapore.
