Established in 1954, Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) was initially named Shanghai Teachers Training College. In 1981, SHNU was among the first batch of Chinese universities approved to confer master's degrees, and in 1986, won the qualifications to admit doctor's degree candidates. From 1972 to 1978, the institute was known as Shanghai Normal University and was renamed Shanghai Teachers University in 1984. Also located in SHNU are, among others, Shanghai Teachers Training Center, Shanghai College Teachers Training Center and the Editorial Department of Academic Abstracts of Liberal Arts of College Journals. Currently, nearly 600 overseas students study at SHNU. The university also has 29 students who have been enrolled to become master’s degree candidates majoring in International Chinese Education, whose tuitions, basic living expenses and accommodations shall be covered by China National Hanban.
