Temasek Polytechnic (TP) is one of the best universities in the beautiful city and country of Singapore. It’s next to the Bedok river, giving every student a connection to nature, but it’s also a very modern institution with some great facilities and a diverse student community. TP’s diploma courses are some of the best in Southeast Asia, and there are lots of different available programmes of study, so every student of every background can find the right option for them.

TP started as a centre for graphic design but has grown and expanded its subject offerings in the last three decades. Now, there are courses in everything from business information and artificial intelligence development to psychology and marketing. There are also several Excellence Centres for research, as well as a library with many databases, archives and resources, and spaces for comfortable study.

Whether they’re studying full-time diplomas or FutureSkills courses, students get the same high level of expertise and support (academic and emotional) from the staff at TP. The support staff will solve any problem quickly and easily, from financial worries to emotional stresses. The tutors and lecturers often win national awards, and in many faculties the students perform better than they do at other universities in Singapore, too.

Beyond academics, TP always aims to prepare its students for their future careers and give them the important skills that employers are looking for. Plus, the location of the university is perfect for enjoying the social student life of Singapore. There are lots of great clubs, bars and venues around the university, and there are also lots of social spaces and cafés where students can relax on campus.

International students will find it very easy to settle in at TP and start their journey toward a long and successful career. Whether that career is in Asia or anywhere else in the world, students will leave with all the right skills to become valuable, well-prepared employees.

Teaching Quality

TP is a young university, but its reputation in Singapore is already great. It’s currently ranked as the 11th best higher education institution in the country, and it achieved that position by offering every student high-quality teaching methods and practical skills. Student satisfaction levels are high, and lecturers never stop working hard to give their classes what they need. This is the definition of quality teaching.

Offering diplomas and other qualifications to post-secondary learners, TP wants to help students who are preparing for university and working adults who want to open up new options in their lives. Its courses and programmes are designed to give students relevant knowledge for the working world, but TP also hopes to give them lasting skills that will help them no matter where they end up in life.

Using applied research techniques, the staff at TP make sure that every student stays involved in and focused on their learning. Part of the teaching quality comes from always putting students and their needs first. Student goals are the priority, and the academic support available supports the easy achievement of these goals.

Some of the university’s original courses in subjects like graphic and interior design are still popular with students. But, since starting its new School of Business, the TP diploma in business has attracted lots of students from across the world. This diploma prepares students for employment in a big way, teaching them the best approaches to professional decision-making and sharing strategies for an ever-changing modern world.

The TP School of Design is still very high-achieving. In 2019, student Dawn Lee was the only student in Asia to win the British D&AD Awards’ famous Yellow Pencil. In 2020, it won Institution of the Year at the Crowbar Awards for the fourth year in a row. Students studying on the information technology and digital film and television diploma courses have also won medals.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for TP depend on the course and qualification a student plans to study. International students will have to provide equivalent results to the standard in Singapore. They should check the information on the course pages before applying. Students can study one of the following course types at TP:

  • Short courses
  • Part-time diploma and post-diploma courses
  • SkillsFuture Series courses
  • Industry-specific courses
  • University preparatory programmes
  • Silver Generation courses
  • Micro-learning courses
  • Online courses
  • SGUnited skills programmes
  • SkillsFuture work-study programmes
  • Nanodegree programmes

For most of the short courses, there are generally no university requirements beyond the ability to show the right level of English language understanding. This is also true for lots of the online courses offered. If students do need any university qualifications or requirements to study these courses, then TP makes that clear early on.

To give an example of more specific university entry requirements, students who want to study a specialist diploma in big data management need at least a polytechnic diploma or an ITE technical diploma to be considered for admission to TP. Or they can gain entry with a technical engineer diploma/work-learn technical diploma. Or they might even be able to gain entry with five years’ work experience in a related field.

English Score Required

To study at TP, students will have to prove their understanding of the English language. The tests recognised by the university depend on the country the student is applying from. There are specific requirements for people from certain countries, so students should be aware of them before submitting their application to make sure they aren’t unnecessarily damaging their own chances of admission.

If international applicants have IGCSE or GCE O Level language abilities, then they should apply with IGCSE test results. If applicants can’t prove their proficiency in another way/aren’t from one of the exception countries (Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, USA), they will need to complete an English proficiency test.

Commonly accepted testing methods include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Depending on their chosen level of study, applicants will need to get a minimum IELTS overall band score of 5.5 or 6 and a minimum TOEFL online score of 46 or 60. The Student Services Department at TP can help and guide international students if they have any questions about English proficiency during the application process.

Admission

Any students applying for university admission with international qualifications must do so via the DAE-Foreign process. Returning Singapore students also have to do this. This is the only way for international students not taking part in the JAE, EAE or JPAE to apply.

All students must apply through the Online Application Portal. They must do this within the admission time frame given by the university. There are also certain admission documents that international students must share with their application, including a hard copy of their Application Record, some proof of ID, and true and original academic transcripts and certificates.

Student admission may also involve an entrance exam depending on a person’s educational background and home country. This exam, if it applies, will take place in the form of an online interview. Students who have the following qualifications will not need to sit any entrance exams:

  • IGCSE
  • International Baccalaureate Year 12
  • Malaysia SPM
  • Malaysia UEC
  • Brunei Cambridge GCE O-Level

There are also some medical requirements that all students at TP have to meet. All students across every course must complete a medical examination with the Singapore Medical Council to be approved to study at the university. This will take place after they have accepted the university’s offer and enrolled on the course. There are support options available for students with disabilities. Other supporting documents that international students will be required to provide during admission include:

  • A passport-sized photograph for their student ID
  • Either a copy of their TP medical forms with a doctor’s signature OR the NIEC medical form if they’re applying for the diploma in early childhood and development education
  • A parent/guardian’s consent form
  • A student pass (once it’s given to them by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority)

Scholarships & Funding

Tuition fees for international students studying a full-time diploma course are SGD 11,400. While that’s cheaper than some other Asian universities, TP wants to welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds. Some of these students will need financial assistance to be able to enrol, and that’s where the university’s scholarships and funding support options come in.

TP scholarships are offered to full-time students only. Students will need to have a proven track record of great academic results and leadership/community-focused activities outside of their studies. The aim of these scholarships is to help students carry on achieving great things with their projects and assignments, making a positive impact.

The Temasek Polytechnic Scholarship is offered to all students, domestic and international, who are studying in the schools of Applied Science, Business, Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Informatics and IT. To be eligible, students must be in the top five per cent of students on their course, and they must have achieved a CGPA of at least 3.5 in their exam results during the first semester of year one.

If awarded, the Temasek Polytechnic Scholarship lasts for three years (if students keep meeting the entry criteria, show great character and have no disciplinary issues, of course). It has a total value of SGD 9,000 (SGD 3,000 per year). There are also the TP Student Excellence Awards for non-academic fields like art, sports and leadership. Individual award options include:

  • The CCA Merit Award (sports/arts/leadership)
  • The Sports Colours Award
  • The Individual Higher Award for Artist of the Year
  • The Individual Higher Award for Sportsperson of the Year
  • The Individual Higher Award for Character Excellence

Plus, each of TP’s schools offers industry-sponsored scholarships. These are funded by external organisations but awarded by the university. Certain scholarships are only awarded to people on certain programmes/studying for certain qualifications. Like the more general university scholarships, they’re awarded based on academic skill and student success.

University Structure

TP has one campus in Singapore, and it’s split into east, west, south and central areas to keep everything organised and well-structured. There are currently over 13,000 students on campus, with 1,400 academic staff to support them and 36 diploma courses being taught across six academic schools:

  • The School of Applied Science (containing the common science programme and five diplomas from chemical engineering to veterinary technology)
  • The School of Business (containing the common business programme and eight diplomas from business to law and management)
  • The School of Design (containing the common design programme and five diplomas from apparel design and merchandising to interior architecture and design)
  • The School of Engineering (containing the common engineering programme and 10 diplomas from aerospace electronics to integrated facility management)
  • The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (containing three diplomas from early childhood development and education to social sciences in gerontology)
  • School of Informatics and IT (containing the common ICT programme and five diplomas from applied artificial intelligence to immersive media and game development)

Facilities

The facilities available to students at TP are great. It has the greatest number of research centres and institutes of any higher education institution in Singapore, as well as lots of great extracurricular facilities that improve TP student life (including shops, food courts, bars and restaurants). All the amenities available to students are designed to help them enjoy every moment of their time at TP; the working moments and the fun moments.

There are 59 lecture theatres in total on campus. They’re each the perfect size to create a connected, comfortable (but not cramped) working environment. The library is a popular student activity centre for studying and research, giving students all the books and resources that they could ever need during their studies. These resources include electronic books, electronic journals, magazines, license-free images and sound records, newspapers, and statistical reports.

Outside of learning hours, sports are a big part of life at TP. The campus student recreation centre is called the Sports and Arts Centre, and it has so many different facilities, including basketball courts, an I-Fit corner, a multi-purpose court and tennis courts. There’s also another sports complex with gym facilities and a full swimming centre for students.

For social fun, students can turn to the TP Student Union for regular events and activities (as well as important academic representation to higher-ups at the university). There are also many ideal on-campus cafés and restaurants, including internationally recognised brands like McDonald’s and Subway. Plus, there are lots of great off-campus accommodation options close by. In a way, all of Singapore is a student life centre for people learning at TP and living in the beautiful city.

Accommodation

TP doesn’t offer any on-campus university accommodation to its students, whether domestic or international. The closest areas to campus are Bedok, Tampines, Simei, and Pasir Ris, and there are plenty of student accommodation choices in these places. Students might want to live in a single apartment, share a student house with other people enrolled at TP, or move in with a local family.

International students can choose to live in HDB (Housing and Development Board) Singapore accommodation if they want to. Generally, single rooms cost about SGD 600 monthly (or SGD 400 monthly for twin sharing rooms). If a student wants to rent an entire HDB apartment, rent could cost anywhere between SGD 1,800 and SGD 2,500 monthly.

Research is important when finding the right accommodation because costs can vary a lot. For example, a single room in a three-bedroom apartment at Simei Green will cost a student SGD 4,992 monthly (the price includes a private workspace, a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV and access to shared facilities including a kitchen, bathroom, washing machine and dryer). Meanwhile, rooms at the Nanyang Hostel range from SGD 850 to SGD 1,950 (they can be single rooms or shared rooms with up to four residents).

Student Support

TP understands that students need to be supported to do well in their academics and become successful. The university’s TP Cares service offers an amazing amount of student support and many different student services, and international students have access to all of them. These include some specialist student support services to help them settle in and handle all the paperwork associated with immigration.

The Campus Care Network aims to create a friendly bond between students and staff. It also aims to help students grow academically and socially. This network includes the wonderful CCN Financial Assistance Scheme and the CCN Emergency Scheme; two hugely useful student support programmes for unexpected and stressful situations that pop up during a person’s studies at TP.

TP counsellors are fully qualified student guides who can listen to and advise students on any of their concerns or issues. They can provide emotional, financial, social and academic support. There’s also a Crisis Hotline that students can ring after office hours, so they will always have someone to talk to at any time of the day or night. There are also various support initiatives put in place for students who have disabilities, as well as a full list of career services that boost student employability.

Graduate Outcomes

Since 1990, over 100,000 graduates have left TP to find success all over the world across many different industries. For applicants considering joining TP’s growing alumni network, there’s never been a better time to study at a polytechnic in Singapore. According to a 2021 student survey of five polytechnics in the country (including TP), the overall graduate employment rate after six months is an impressive 92.2 per cent.

All of the courses and programmes at TP train students for their careers. They learn a lot of important theoretical knowledge, but they combine this knowledge with practical skills that employers are searching for. Plus, outside of the classroom, the university also offers many career services.

There’s a full student internship programme in Singapore, as well as opportunities for international work experience via the Overseas Student Internship Programme. There’s a mentorship programme (former students act as career guides for current students, giving support, motivation and coaching and helping them to prepare for their professional future).

Students can always speak to a career advisor if they want to explore their career options, identify their job prospects and plan for the future. Students can also come to workshops and sessions covering important basic skills like CV writing and leadership in the workplace.

With so many employment services on offer, it’s not a surprise that so many employers are happy to hire TP graduates. There aren’t many universities in the country that prepare students as well for the world of work. For any potential applicant of any background, TP is a great place to get an education and start a career while living in the exciting city of Singapore.
