What advice do you have for international students who want to study in Canada?

1 Answer

BA/BSc in Computer Science

Canada is a top choice for international students due to its high quality education, multicultural environment, and post-graduation work opportunities. However, adjusting to a new country can be challenging, so building a strong support system is essential. To avoid feeling isolated, make friends, join clubs, and participate in campus activities. Developing a good relationship with your professors is also important, as they can provide references or offer research opportunities. Balancing academics and work is key. International students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks, but time management is crucial to avoid burnout. Financial planning is also necessary, so budget carefully, explore scholarships, and consider on-campus jobs. Take advantage of available resources such as academic advising, career services, and mental health counseling. Networking is vital for career growth, so attend career fairs, connect with alumni, and build a strong LinkedIn profile. Additionally, understanding Canada’s immigration policies is crucial so you’ll know when to renew your study permit and avoid being stuck outside Canada if it expires. Be prepared for Canada’s climate, stay informed about your study permit conditions, and understand your rights as a student and tenant. By being proactive and engaged, you’ll make the most of your experience in Canada and set yourself up for success.

I chose Trent University because it has a great educational system that allows me to expand not only my knowledge but also my future job opportunities. I love Trent because their courses go beyond lectures where a professor explains topics, instead they are interactive classes where I have the option to practice and apply the knowledge learned in real life examples. For example, in the Media Studies program, we learn in class the different editing and lighting techniques, and then we have workshop sessions where we practice the techniques and then edit the photos in the university's editing room. With this, Trent prepares me for the job market by teaching me skills that will set me apart from the rest when looking for a job.

My program is business and my favourite part about the program is the opportunities Trent provides alongside the education. There are various co-op, internship or in course placement options available for a practical experience. The availability of multiple courses related to the specialisations is also one of the reason I chose Trent to pursue this program . Business is a very vast concept but through understanding of all the basic concepts in the first 2 years of university, one can select if they want to study something specifically as well. These opportunities make me like my course even more.

My program offers numerous experiential learning opportunities. In the fourth year, it includes a supervised project where real-world datasets are used to develop and evaluate solutions using data science techniques. Additionally, one of my first-year courses included a voluntary community service learning opportunity, connecting us with local non-profit businesses where we gained valuable work experience. Moreover, CareerSpace department supports students in securing internships and placements, providing hands-on experience while completing their studies.

In the Media Studies program at Trent, there are endless experiential learning opportunities, including workshops and co-op options. The workshops are my favourite because they go beyond learning concepts, focusing on how different production techniques are used in the media industry. At Trent, there are workshops in photography, video game design, electronic music, punk music, documentary film, experimental film, and radio and podcasting. For example, in the photography workshop, we learn the different techniques for taking photos with digital cameras, developing photos with old cameras, and editing with programs like Photoshop. These workshops allow you to learn multiple skills, whether it's video coding, creating animated shorts, or music production. There are also Co-op options, where students have the opportunity to work for 12 months in a media company, in order to apply the knowledge acquired, expand their skills, gain more experience in the workplace, and explore career options. In conclusion, the Media Studies program at Trent University allows you to learn both in class and in the workplace.
