Civil engineering is a broad discipline that uses applied and leading-edge science to improve our quality of life by providing essential infrastructure, solving environmental problems resulting from industrialization and resource consumption, and mitigating natural disasters.
Common First Year
All first-year students complete a common first year. Courses include: Introductory Engineering Design and Innovation Studio, Applied Mathematics - Calculus, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics - Linear Algebra, Physics, Computer Programming Fundamentals, Properties of Materials, and Statics.
Civil Engineering Common Second Year
Our common second year provides students with the general background and training essential for any civil engineer.
Structural Engineering Option
In our established Structural Engineering option, students take courses in areas such as Structural Theory and Design, Reinforced and Restressed Concrete Design, Steel Design, Structural Dynamics, Finite Element Design and Tall Buildings, Soil Mechanics, Business, Engineering Ethics, Sustainable Development and Law.
Environmental Engineering Option
This option focuses on the environmental aspects of civil engineering. Courses include: Drinking Water Quality and Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Design for Waste Disposal, Environmental Hydraulics Design, Water Resource Management, Soil Mechanics, Business, Engineering Ethics, Sustainable Development and Law.
International Development with Structural or Environmental Engineering Options
These options introduce students to the complex societal, environmental, political and economic issues associated with building safer communities in Canada and in the developing world. A centerpiece of the International Development option is the Summer Community Development Placement and Design Project where students have an opportunity to work for four months in developing countries, or in-need communities in Canada.
