Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who wish to learn about the building engineering and construction management professions. The advancing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management and communication. Students are also given intellectual challenges that promote their development and enhance their problem-solving skills. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers, because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the expertise necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise and control the complex process of building projects.
Characteristics
Students in the 4-year undergraduate curriculum are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits.
Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the study period to give students a better understanding of industry practice.
The Department also maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with employers and senior members of the professions to gain practical insights into professional practice.
The Department operates Work-Integrated Education (WIE) in collaboration with the University to help students in placement. WIE during the summer term is an integral element of the curriculum, and the completion of practical training is essential for fulfilling graduation requirements.
The Department also operates a student exchange programme to give students the opportunity to study abroad for one academic semester at universities in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, etc.
All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. After their first year of study, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.
