Gain the expertise needed for professional work in the translation industry, focused on translating audiovisual programmes. The Translation and Technology (Audiovisual) MSc will enable you to develop your translation and language skills, while learning industry-standard translation technology. Taught at UCL, you’ll learn from specialists in different aspects of the translation workflow and develop your understanding of media accessibility too. The Translation and Technology (Audiovisual) MSc is based in UCL's Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS), an interdisciplinary research centre that is home to postgraduate degrees in Translation and Technology (MSc) and Translation Studies (MA). Students benefit from an excellent research environment and a broad range of cross-disciplinary expertise offered by UCL’s Centre for Multidisciplinary and Intercultural Inquiry (CMII) within the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS). On this course, you will take six core modules, which are designed to work as a postgraduate-level foundation and provide you with specific audiovisual translation skills and the knowledge to research, write essays and the dissertation. You will also choose two optional modules. By focusing on the translation of audiovisual programmes, you will be equipped with the skills needed for professional work in the translation industry and for research in translation studies. You will practise translation in specific language pairs and will become conversant with industry-standard subtitling software and translation technology, which have been transforming the way in which professional audiovisual translators work. The MSc is suitable for both practitioners and recent graduates looking to specialise in the fields of audiovisual translation, accessibility to the media and translation technology, as well as for those aiming for a research degree and/or academic career. MSc pathways are only offered in specific language pairs and directions. In line with industry standards, MSc students are only allowed to translate from a language they are proficient in (Advanced level) into their mother tongue or native language.
