The synthesis, characterization, and utilization of novel materials occupy a central role in modern science and technology. Materials chemistry is a highly interdisciplinary endeavor, which is exemplified by the diversity of our faculty conducting research in the field. Our interests include: Semiconductor materials, New materials for solar cells and optoelectronics, Nano/bio photonics and imaging, Computational methods for modeling surfaces, New strategies for applying the tools of nanotechnology to materials synthesis, Imprinted polymer-materials for chemical and biochemical sensing, Nanocarbon MaterialsMake innovative strides in science with advanced research and educational opportunities in Chemistry.The Ph.D. degree emphasizes independent research in an area of chemistry of your choosing. It also includes advanced coursework that equips you with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry while preparing you to apply your knowledge to problems at the forefront of science. Collaborations and interdisciplinary research projects are an important and growing feature of our program. Ph.D. degrees are available with primary concentrations in Inorganic, Organic, Physical, or Analytical Chemistry, or in Chemistry Education.
