Founded on the principles of diversity and inclusion, the Music (BFA BA) program is unique in recognizing students with musical talent and ambition who arrive with a wide variety of musical backgrounds. The Music (BFA BA) program builds on these experiences by providing a common foundation through four core courses in the first two years. Students then specialize further during their final two years and can explore the full range of options available to them. Regardless of specialization, students will develop skills in various musical practices and cultural forms. Students in the Music (BFA BA) program can specialize or generalize according to their interests after a diverse foundational first- and second-year common practice.The Department of Music has valued improvisation as contributing to the musical flexibility required for success in performance. Studies in contemporary improvisation, through private instruction, class engagement, and ensemble performance, guide students in developing the musical versatility required to flourish in today’s evolving creative environment. The courses listed below complement studies in other areas of performance.
