WHY STUDY MUSIC AT DALHOUSIE?

Become a professional in music, or combine your music studies with programs in science, theatre or information technology. Here at Dalhousie, you'll get the theory and training you need for the future you want. You'll have the opportunity to study with internationally recognized musicians and music scholars and participate in regular performances.

What will I learn?

Through the study of Music, students can develop expertise as listeners, performers and creators. You'll have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses from one-on-one studio instruction, to small seminars and large lectures. You can also study a wide range of instruments as well as voice.

Training in music teaches poise, discipline, creativity, collaboration and the ability to think on one’s feet. These skills are excellent preparation for many career paths in and beyond the performing arts.

Public performance by students in the Fountain School of Performing Arts is a key element of our programs, strongly encouraged and supported by the faculty. Weekly studio lessons in voice, guitar, piano, organ, and orchestral and band instruments are complemented by participation in numerous ensembles that present regular concerts.

Careers and future study:

Music grads are creative, articulate, adaptable and confident and have gone on to do outstanding work in a wide variety of areas including:

  • musicologist
  • composer
  • performer
  • teacher
  • director/conductor

Focused music studies offered in the Bachelor of Music also prepares graduates for further study at the graduate level in many areas, including performance, composition, theory, musicology, popular musics, and more.

To be considered for admission into the BEDS program, you must complete at least two years of specific undergraduate level courses. A minimum average of B- is required. Two years in a university degree program (twenty courses), with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (B- average). English language requirement: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band; Michigan English Test (MELAB) – 55; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill.
