This interdisciplinary programme will allow you to acquire an in-depth understanding of how risks from natural hazards materialise and affect societies globally and to develop conceptual and analytical skills to assess and propose innovative solution. The programme is delivered through a mixture of approaches including lectures, seminars, field classes and experiential learning. Students have the opportunity to undertake a work placement with a wide range of organisations and apply theoretical and practical skills developed throughout the core courses. You will be studying in the South of Scotland where the landscape offers opportunities for multiple field visits to study real case examples of risks linked to natural hazards (in the sea, on the coast, on land) There will be a choice between a dissertation or work placement in the last semester The opportunity to hear from guest lecturers from government and non-government organisations, from international agencies and from academia You will develop subject-specific knowledge of environmental risk management with broad-application from local to global levels. There are 4 core courses of 20 credits each. Learners will have to take 2 optional courses from a list of 6 courses. They will have the choice between a dissertation or work placement (60 credits).The set of skills you will acquire in the programme will allow you to pursue a diversity of careers in the private sector including consultancies public organisations, in particular those dealing with issues related to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and sustainable development non-governmental organisations and intergovernmental organisations or you can proceed to undertake PhD research and a potential academic career.
