The BSc (Hons) Equine Science is for individuals passionate about understanding equids and advancing standards of equine health, welfare, and performance. Combining scientific knowledge with practical and industry-focused learning, the course equips students with the skills and experience required for careers within the modern equine sector.Students develop a comprehensive understanding of equids through the study of anatomy and physiology, health and disease, nutrition, genetics, biomechanics, behaviour, and welfare. These subjects provide the knowledge needed to understand the factors that influence equine management, rehabilitation, breeding, and performance across a range of industry settings. The course emphasises the application of evidence to real-world contexts. Students engage in laboratory investigations, fieldwork, data analysis, research activities, and industry-focused projects that develop scientific, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Contemporary issues affecting the equine sector, including welfare, ethics, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, are explored throughout the course. Students also examine how research, data-driven approaches and emerging digital technologies contribute to improvements in equine welfare, management, and performance.Alongside specialist knowledge, students develop a range of transferable skills valued by employers, including communication, teamwork, project management, digital literacy, data interpretation, critical thinking, and research skills. A strong focus on employability and professional development ensures graduates are prepared for both employment and lifelong learning.Teaching is delivered by experienced academic staff with expertise in research, education, and industry practice, ensuring learning reflects current scientific understanding and industry developments. Students are encouraged to engage critically with evidence and develop the confidence to inform decision-making within professional contexts.Students benefit from access to Reaseheath’s industry-standard Equestrian centre, a £3.5 million facility that supports practical teaching, skills development, and applied research. Facilities include indoor and outdoor arenas, stabling for over 60 horses, a mechanical horse, rider performance testing equipment, and advanced gait analysis technology. These resources enable students to apply scientific principles in professional equine environments and gain experience using technologies employed across the equine industry. The course is further supported by well-equipped laboratories and specialist software that enable students to develop analytical, investigative, and research skills. Access to digital tools enhances students’ ability to collect, interpret, and communicate scientific data.Learning is enriched through field trips, industry visits, guest lectures, demonstrations, and specialist workshops. These experiences provide valuable insight into contemporary practice, emerging trends, and career opportunities across the equine sector.A major feature of the course is the independent research project, enabling students to investigate an area of personal and professional interest in depth. Through this project, students apply research methods, analyse data, evaluate evidence and demonstrate advanced academic and professional skills.Graduates are well prepared for careers in equine welfare and behaviour, nutrition, breeding and stud management, rehabilitation, research, education, consultancy, technical support, and equine enterprise management. The course also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in equine science, animal science, veterinary-related disciplines, and research.
