PhD (Doctorate), normally of three years duration leading to a thesis of no more than 80,000 words and an oral examination. During their first two years in Modern Languages, PhD students would typically participate in the School’s in-house training programme as well as in the ''Observing teaching'' exercise in order to develop their teaching skills, to enhance their employability and to be better prepared for the life of a professional academic.The ability to understand foreign languages and cultures ought to be one of the fundamental principles of the globalised world.
