The MPhys Physics with Advanced Research is designed for students aiming for PhD study or research‑intensive careers in academia or industry.
Throughout the degree, you’ll build deep expertise in core and advanced physics while developing the skills that define a professional researcher-independent problem solving, advanced data analysis, and clear scientific communication.
Compared to the BSc Honours degree, the MPhys Physics with Advanced Research offers greater depth and intensity, with advanced training that reflects the skills and knowledge expected in professional research environments. From Year 3 onwards, alongside core physics, you’ll specialise in either advanced experimental physics or computational and mathematical physics, building expertise in areas such as instrumentation, data analysis, numerical modelling, and scientific computing. These technical skills are combined with strong training in problem solving and scientific communication, ensuring you can analyse complex problems and present solutions clearly and concisely.
In Years 4 and 5, you’ll tailor your degree to your interests by selecting from a diverse choice of optional modules including theoretical physics, plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and photonics. This structure allows you to develop in‑depth subject expertise aligned with specific career goals, whether in advanced technology sectors or fundamental research.
A defining feature of this degree are the extended open‑ended research projects undertaken across both 4th and 5th year, where you will become embedded within one of the department’s active research groups. Working alongside experienced researchers, you’ll contribute to cutting‑edge projects and gain first‑hand insight into how physics research is carried out.
By the time you graduate with an MPhys Physics with Advanced Research degree, you’ll have the depth of knowledge, sustained research training and confidence needed to transition seamlessly into doctoral research or advanced R&D roles, positioning you to help shape the future of physics and technology.
