The IDS degree program is a broader, interdisciplinary course of study rather than a traditional major/minor. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree prepares students to think critically and analytically across multiple disciplines or fields of study. With a flexible degree program, you choose classes that are interesting and meaningful to you. Students take the majority of their courses in an Emphasis, which requires 27 units. The remaining courses are taken in 3 different Concentrations, with 9 units required in each Concentration. The Emphasis and the Concentration themes are discussed in more depth on the emphases page.Social Behavior and Human Understanding provides students with a basis for understanding social systems and the interactions of individuals and societies. Selected courses should emphasize the ability to understand and analyze multiple perspectives on social and cultural change, and to assess the strengths and weaknesses of conflicting points of view. Emphasis theme requirements stipulate students take courses in at least two different disciplines that emphasize the development of an appreciation of and sensitivity to differences between and among individuals in different economic, political, religious, cultural, ethnic, and social groups.
