The mission of the LIU Post Genetic Counseling Graduate Program (GCGP) is to develop genetic counselors that have the knowledge, skill and experience to succeed in all areas of the field by providing comprehensive training emphasizing the scientific, clinical and psychosocial aspects of genetic counseling. As genetic testing becomes more available, patients are gaining unprecedented access to information about the likelihood of diseases and medical conditions. There is increased demand for professionals who can accurately interpret genetic test results and inform individuals to take a proactive approach to their health. The objective of the Genetic Counseling Graduate Program makes every effort to ensure students entering the profession are technically competent, identify with the values and ethics of the profession, and are motivated to deliver genetics services in a skilled manner. Students admitted to the LIU-Post GCGP are expected to meet all requirements recorded within the Student Handbook, sent to all students at the beginning of every academic year. The guidelines for performance standards, behavior and competence that are expected of students throughout their time in the program are outlined there. These guidelines include fulfillment of learning objectives in didactic coursework, satisfactory performance evaluations for the five clinical internships, and meeting overall expectations for behavior and conduct.
