The Master of Arts in comparative religion at Western Michigan University is designed to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge of at least two religious traditions, the principal classical works in the field of comparative religion, and the central issues of theory and method that underlie the discipline of the study of religion.

THESIS REQUIREMENT (OPTION TWO)

Option two requires a thesis and four additional requirements:

Complete a total of at least 27 hours of course work, including 12 hours of required core courses and 15 hours of electives chosen from approved courses.
Prepare a master's thesis (six hours) under the direction of a thesis advisor.
Demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language relevant to their research area.
Defend the master's thesis in oral examination.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to complete 33 credit hours of coursework consisting of core and elective courses.

Core courses (required of all students)

REL 6000–Comparative Religion Professional Seminar
REL 6100–Theory and Method
REL 6150–Pedagogy: Teaching World Religions
REL 6200–Advanced Writing Seminar in Comparative Religion

Elective courses

Students who choose the thesis option are required to complete 15 hours of elective coursework. For those who choose the non-thesis option, the requirement is 21 hours. Electives may be drawn from the following courses:

REL 5000–Historical Studies in Religion
REL 5100–Comparative Studies in Religion
REL 5980–Readings in Religion
REL 7100–Independent Research
REL 7120–Professional Field Experience

The accelerated degree program allows current WMU undergraduates to accumulate credit hours towards the completion of the MA while still enrolled as an undergraduate. Students may take up to 12 credit hours of 5000 and 6000 level courses for graduate credit. The designated courses may be used to complete both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree.

Students who complete the MA go on to further graduate level work (including law school, medical school, and Ph.D. programs), to jobs in academia (teaching, advising, libraries), and to work in non-profits and non-governmental organizations.

For Fall entry, and consideration for a graduate assistantship: February 15. For Spring entry: applicants can apply up to one week prior to the start of the spring semester.
