The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program offers a pathway to teaching for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree but have little or no experience in education. The MAT in PE & Health, offered by the Watson College of Education in partnership with the College of Health and Human Services, will prepare you to teach, coach and assume leadership positions in K-12 schools or community college settings. The program is offered in a distance education format, which combines online courses with applied learning experiences. Our program has been carefully designed to prepare students to be effective in the professional-world setting. You will gain valuable applied learning experiences in public schools, complete an action research project, and develop a teaching portfolio, based on specialization objectives and state/national standards for PEH teachers.During the final semester, students will participate in full-time student teaching under the guidance of a mentor teacher and faculty supervisor. Successful completion of the program and licensure requirements will lead to a master’s degree and North Carolina teacher certification in Physical Education and Health. We provide high placement rates and support beyond graduation.
